Questions for my first profession
Hi all!! I have just ordered my copy of Guild Wars. I have been reading up on forums trying to get a feel of the professions, game basics, etc. I would like to ask some advice. Could you please suggest the professions for my first character? I want a profession that is in demand while making groups... whether for quests/missions or PvP. Also some solobility for "farming" at the end game is desirable.
I have read here that W/Mo have a bad reputation. So I guess I will avoid taking that combo for my first character. |

The first thing to say mate, is ignor what other people think. Just because a certain group of people like to paint W/Mo as noobs, does not mean that they are. I prefer to think that it just means that they are people who have no life and do nothing other than play the game. It all comes down to personal choice, and for your first character I would recomend you just play what you think you may enjoy. Any character can get into a team, some are supposedly harder to get into groups with, but when I played my R/Mo (very hated in missions supposedly) I never had a problem finding a group.

Well, if you want something that is in demand and also is good at end-game soloing, Monk is for you. I'd suggest going Monk/Mesmer to start off with, then once you reach end-game switch to Monk/Warrior (for farming). Monk is an awesome class, I love being a Healer on mine. They also have some moderate damage dealing with Smiting Prayers, but most teams are in need of a Healer.
Ranger is also a great class for a beginner, there are many options available for them. My personal favorite is Mesmer, but it does take a bit of understanding of skill types, and knowledge of monsters' reaction to certain situations, so may be a better second or third character. But go with whatever you feel suits your interest, there are never wrong choices in Guild Wars regarding profession choices. I hope that helps a bit, and I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have. If you need help in-game, feel free to whisper, my IGNs are to the left. I'm one of the War/mo's and also a Mo/war, I never had a problem getting in any group as a war/mo, even if War/mo is a no brainer there is still a proper way to play him, and a good war/mo is very valuable to groups. The best thinking char are any combos of 2of3 of mes/nec/mo.

My personal opinion is, if you don't care what your secondary is, take Monk as secondary. In PvE quests, the unlimited Resurrect skill is most useful (not so useful in PvP where the long casting time kills the benefit).

But for the OP - if you want to get down into the middle of the fight, Warrior is the job for you. If you want to cause serious damage from a distance, an Elementalist is the way to go. If you want to mess up the opponents offensive efforts, Mesmers are the thing (they're SO much fun! - but underappreciated) Monks stay in the background and keep everyone else alive (generally). Rangers have quite a few options in how to play them, beastmaster, interrupter, and trapper, are the 3 most common builds. Can't tell you about Necros, as I've never played one. |

As I said, my Ele never has any troubles kicking arse or finding a group, even when he is set up with a Warrior secondary. Farming with him is easy, and generates the profits quite quickly (faster than my W/Mo to be honest). My Warrior/Monk is generally invited into groups the minute I load into an outpost, especially Mission outposts (must be the 15k Dragons Armor and awesome cape ). My Ranger, I tend to play solo, but he too has no troubles finding groups when need be. My old dearly departed Necro was fun, but his replacement (my Mesmer/Necro) is just as fun and, as with my other characters, has no troubles at all. To make a more direct response to your post quark123, it really does just depend on how you want to play the game. I'd suggest creating a couple of characters and messing around with them in Pre-Searing for a bit, gradually getting the feel for each class. From there, you can decide what you like to do, and what you are best at. After completing the game, you can make another character with a different set of professions and practice playing them; it's always best to be able to fill multiple roles at any given time. The best advice I can give you is to not pick your profession based on what other people tell you to play, or by what you read here at Guru (or other GW fansites). Everyone is different, and looks for a different experience. Don't go with the flow; rather, create your own flow to drift in |

I would say it would come down the the style of play you like. If you like using magic go with and elementalist or a mesmer, maybe even a necro. If you like weapons go with a warrior or a Ranger. I strongly discourage having a monk as your first character. I find they take a completely different style and way of playing.
My strongest suggestion would be to pick whatever you think is cool. Use this first character to explore the game, learn the ins and outs, learn how to form parties, talk in chat, trade, do quests and missions, craft armor etc. This character does not have to be "leet" right away. My first character was the dreaded Warrior/Monk, but that was over 7 months ago. He is now in retirement, but I found him to be a very good combo when it comes to just simply learning how to play Guild Wars. Once you start figuring things out, then try out a new class type. The MOST fun part of this game is discovering things on your own!! You will get a much better sense of accomplishment that way. So take your time and enjoy it. Don't get ran to the next towns. Don't get ran thru missions. Don't buy the best weapons and gear first thing. I think you will find the game so much more rewarding if you do these things yourself. |

My first and fave charr is a ele but people dont like them for farming and for missions save yourself trouble and become something wanted!! Because when you need thing's and discover that you cant get them with a Ele or Mesmar your going to be upset and forming party's is a very hard one.
